A summer Saturday in Decorah often starts with the sound of Dunning’s Spring, a waterfall spilling over limestone a few minutes from downtown. By afternoon, people are floating on the Upper Iowa River, and Water Street is busy with shoppers. For couples, the good news is that some of the town’s prettiest spots are public parks with rental fees well under $100.
Use the choices below to match your guest count and budget to the right Decorah venue.
Prices and hours can change, so please confirm with each business before booking.
Choose Whalen Cabin If You Want an Indoor Reception for About 80
Whalen Cabin, a block from Phelps Park, is the city’s best wedding deal.
- Capacity: about 80 people, using the cabin and attached shelter
- Inside: a restroom, stove, refrigerator, microwave, tables and chairs
- Outside: a picnic shelter with tables and a grill
- Fee: $60 per time slot (9 a.m.–2 p.m. or 3–10 p.m.), or $84 for the whole day
Choose it if you want a roof, a kitchen and a restroom for a potluck-style or catered meal on a small budget.

Choose a Phelps Park Shelter or the Bandshell for the Lowest Cost
Picnic shelters cost $12 per time slot or $18 all day. Each Phelps Park shelter has picnic tables, an outlet and a grill, and the park has restrooms. Couples often hold the ceremony at the Phelps Park bandshell and then move to a shelter for the meal.
Choose it if you want an outdoor, picnic-style wedding and every dollar counts.
Choose Twin Springs or Dunning’s Spring for a Ceremony Only
These two parks are favorites for the ceremony itself. Neither has restrooms or picnic shelters, and parking is limited, so hold the reception somewhere else. You can bring chairs or a canopy, but the park isn’t closed to the public, and other visitors may wander by.
Choose it if your ceremony is short and the photos matter most.

Choose Hotel Winneshiek If You Want Downtown and Rooms
The historic downtown hotel has three event spaces. WeddingWire lists receptions from a $500 site fee, with no site fee for ceremonies. The listing gives capacity as up to 250, though it also mentions 20–300 guests, so confirm.
Choose it if you want guests to stay where the party is, and you’d rather not set up and tear down yourself.

Choose Pinter’s Event Center or a Nearby Barn for 200+ Guests
- Pinter’s Event Center (2475 State Hwy. 9): tables and chairs for up to 460, a reception hall, bridal suite, amphitheater and prep kitchen, with Friday setup and Saturday wedding included. Pricing: call (563) 382-0010.
- The Barn on Heron Hill (St. Olaf): 300+ guests, from $3,000 on The Knot
- White Haus Social (Waukon): 300+ guests, from $3,500 on The Knot
Choose it if your guest list is too large for a park and you want one space for everything.
Ways to Save in Decorah
- Call early. Shelter and Whalen Cabin requests open on the first weekday of January at 8 a.m., and calls are returned in order. The number is 563-382-4158.
- Pay on time. Fees are due a week ahead, and they’re non-refundable unless you cancel two weeks out.
- Split the day. Ceremony at Dunning’s Spring, then a $60 cabin slot for the meal.
- Avoid festival weekends. Nordic Fest in late July fills hotels fast.
- Wrap up on time. Parks close at 11 p.m.
- Go paperless. A wedding website template with RSVP and maps is a one-time purchase with no monthly fee, so you can send park directions and parking tips without printing anything.
