At about 5 p.m. on a January evening in Sun Valley, the light goes blue on Bald Mountain and the last skiers ride down while windows start glowing in the lodges below. Winter weddings here follow that rhythm. Ceremonies happen in the afternoon light, and receptions move indoors to a cabin, a lodge or an on-mountain room you reach by gondola.
Snow, holiday crowds and flights into a small mountain airport all affect the timing. This plan works backward from your date.
Prices and hours can change, so please confirm with each business before booking.
12 Months Out: Lock In a Winter-Ready Venue
These Sun Valley Resort venues are available in winter (rental fees from the resort’s wedding page):

| Limelight Ballroom (Ketchum) | 550 | Year-round | $5,000–$8,000 |
Small and intimate: Trail Creek Cabin is the classic winter pick for under 66 guests. Ski-town big: River Run or the Roundhouse.
For a ceremony in a church, local options include Our Lady of the Snows, St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Church of the Big Wood. Call each about non-member weddings.

9 Months Out: Room Blocks for the Holiday Rush
Late December through New Year’s and the big ski weeks in February and March are Sun Valley’s busiest winter stretches, and lodging fills early. At this stage:
- Reserve a room block at the resort or in Ketchum (the Limelight is in town).
- Avoid holiday weeks if your budget is tight. Early December or April usually means easier rooms.
- Hire your photographer and planner. Winter weekends with good snow are popular for events.
6 Months Out: Transportation and a Snow Plan
Guests get to Sun Valley one of three ways:
- Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey, about 12 miles from the lifts. Uber, the Mountain Rides bus, resort shuttles and rental cars are available.
- Boise (BOI): about 2.5 hours by car. Sun Valley Express runs a shuttle for $85 each way (reservations required).
- Salt Lake City (SLC): about 4.5 hours in good weather, crossing two low passes.
The winter catch: high winds or heavy snow can divert SUN flights to Twin Falls or Boise. Tell guests to arrive a day early and check Idaho 511 for road conditions.
Also plan:
- A shuttle between the venue and hotels so nobody drives icy roads at night
- A coat-and-boot check
- Trail Creek Cabin sleigh transfers (ask the resort about availability and cost)

2 Months Out: Your Marriage License in Hailey
Blaine County issues licenses at the Recorder’s Office, 206 1st Avenue South, Suite 200, Hailey:
- Both of you appear in person with valid photo ID.
- Hours: Monday–Thursday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing.
- Appointments can be booked online; fill out the application beforehand.
- Fee: the county page lists $28 for applicants without a Social Security number; call to confirm the standard fee.
Hailey is on the way in from the airport, so many couples stop there on arrival day.
Ride the Roundhouse Express gondola to see the on-mountain setting in winter:
Wedding Week: Watch the Weather and Confirm Everything
- Check the forecast and Idaho 511 daily, and message guests with any travel changes.
- Confirm the gondola if you booked the Roundhouse. Access depends on it running.
- Schedule photos early. Winter light fades by late afternoon; plan outdoor portraits in the middle of the day.
- Pack for snow: warm wraps, boots for photos and hand warmers.
Keep travel updates in one place. A one-time-purchase wedding website template can hold shuttle times, flight tips and your RSVP, with no monthly fee.

Is a Winter Wedding Cheaper Here?
Not necessarily. Sun Valley is a ski resort, so winter is a high season. Rental fees in the table don’t drop for winter, and holiday weeks push up lodging. Early December and early April tend to be the better-value windows, with fewer crowds. Choose a smaller venue like Trail Creek Cabin or Dollar Lodge to keep total costs down.
More winter and mountain guides: small wedding venues in Jackson WY, barn wedding venues near Bardstown KY and a courthouse wedding in Fredericksburg TX for the simplest legal ceremony.
Start with a venue call to weddings@sunvalley.com or (208) 622-2047, then choose your wedding website template.
